Mesothelioma and Work Exposure

The people who work with asbestos are at higher risk of mesothelioma. Firefighters, construction workers and veterans of the military are at higher risk.

The lung's lining (pleural mesothelioma) or the abdomen, is the most common mesothelioma site. In rare cases it can affect the heart and testicles.

Symptoms

The tissues that are found in the lungs, stomach, and heart are known as mesothelium. Mesothelioma develops in the mesothelium when cells start to grow out of control. It is believed that asbestos causes mesothelioma through the destruction of cells DNA. The damaged cells reproduce and the cancer spreads as time passes. It is not clear what other factors cause mesothelioma. Researchers have discovered that exposure to asbestos is a common factor in mesothelioma. Direct and indirect exposure to asbestos is possible.

The most prevalent mesothelioma type begins in the tissue around each lung (the Pleura). It can also start in the lining that surrounds the abdomen (the perineum) or in other parts of the body.

Early mesothelioma symptoms generally do not cause any discomfort or pain. They may include a constant cough, breathing difficulties, weight loss, abdominal pain and fever. As tumors develop, they may cause pain to nerves and organs. Certain mesothelioma types can be very aggressive, but those that are the most severe have a better chance to respond to treatment than other cancers such as colon cancer or breast cancer.

Mesothelioma is difficult to identify because it is a rare condition. The first symptoms of mesothelioma are often misdiagnosed as other illnesses.

A doctor will likely conduct a physical exam and collect a detailed medical and work history. They will inquire about any previous asbestos claim exposure, as mesothelioma is mostly caused by breathing in asbestos fibers. There are four different mesothelioma types depending on the place where the tumour formed. The pleura is the tissue that protects the chest wall and lungs. This is where most mesothelioma cases are found. This is referred to as pleural mesothelioma, and it is responsible for about 80 percent of all mesothelioma cases. Peritoneal mesothelioma is a rarer type of mesothelioma that is a result of the abdominal lining. Pericardial mesothelioma is a less common form of mesothelioma that is found in the lining around the heart.

Symptoms of mesothelioma can resemble the symptoms of other diseases and conditions which makes it difficult to identify. Additionally, the disease can take anywhere from 10 to 50 years to manifest, and symptoms can come and go. It's difficult to know the frequency of monitoring symptoms or how to detect early signs of the disease.

Mesothelioma is mostly caused by asbestos exposure. However other factors, such as smoking or age, as well as genetics, can also increase the risk of developing the disease. Some studies suggest that an X-ray procedure that is used in the workplace can also increase the risk of developing mesothelioma. However, this has not been confirmed. Having a family history of mesothelioma, or other asbestos-related illnesses can also increase the risk.

Treatment

Mesothelioma is a cancer that is found in the linings of protection that protect certain organs. The most common type of mesothelioma, which accounts for 60 to 70% all diagnosed cases epithelioid. Sarcomatoid mesothelioma accounts for 10% to 15 percent of cases, and is more invasive than other types of mesothelioma. Biphasic mesothelioma can be found in 30 to 40% of cases. It is a mix of epithelioid/sarcomatoid cancer. In rare instances, a genetic mutation can cause mesothelioma. Consult your physician about genetic testing if have a family history.

Prognosis

Like all cancers, mesothelioma is caused by mutations in a cell's genetic code that allow it to grow in a way that is not controlled. These cells accumulate to form an uncontrolled tumor. Scientists aren't certain the causes of mesothelioma, but they do know that asbestos exposure increases the risk. People who are exposed to asbestos in the workplace are the most at risk, especially those employed in blue-collar sectors or the Navy. Exposure to asbestos increases the chance of developing mesothelioma which is the most prevalent type. The mesothelioma type develops in the lung's lining (pleura), but it can also occur in the lining of the abdomen (peritoneum) or heart (pericardium).

The symptoms of pleural Mesothelioma might not show up for 10 to 50 years. They can include chest pain and difficulty breathing. Mesothelioma could cause the formation of fluid inside the lung. This can cause inflammation of the tissue around the lungs.
