Transponder Keys

In contrast to flat metal keys that work mechanically using cuts on the top and bottom, transponder (a portmanteau of responder and transmitter) keys are equipped with an electronic microchip within their key heads. When they are placed in a car which uses transponder technology the chip transmits an unintentional signal to a receiver located close to the ignition switch. If the chip is programmed to do so it will cause the engine to start. Transponder chips are designed to prevent car theft which is why a majority of modern vehicles have them.

Transponder technology was first used in World War II, when coded messages were transmitted on radio frequencies to determine if aircraft incoming were friendly or hostile. General Motors created the first transponder key in 1985, for its Corvette. Since then, they've become standard on most new cars, and can also be retrofitted into older models.

If you own a car with this type of security system, you should always keep an extra transponder key at hand, as it will only work when the chip is read correctly. It isn't foolproof. Proximity Keys

Proximity keys are one of the most recent keyless entry solutions, which are becoming popular on a variety vehicles. The key fob can be carried in a pocket, or bag and used to unlock the car. The key fob connects to the vehicle, removing immobilisers from the vehicle and allows it to start.

There are some downsides to proximity key systems however. If the key fob is damaged or lost it won't be able to start the car. A locksmith or the dealership will need to replace it, and this can be expensive. The fobs are also powered by batteries, so they'll need to be periodically replaced.

The proximity key technology also has the disadvantage of breaking the cause-and-effect cycle we are familiar with when using physical keys. With a traditional key when you press the lock and it opens, you'll know that you have the smart key skoda. With proximity-sensing keys you'll have to be within a certain distance from the car to activate it.

Keyless Entry Systems

The days of storing keys outside of the home are long gone and landlords can offer tenants better security by installing a keyless entry system. These systems are linked to back-end software that allows landlords to track entry and exit. Keyless entry works by transmitting encrypted signals a receiver inside the car. The receiver receives the signal and unlocks or begins your car. It can also detect the presence of a driver and adjust vehicle settings to accommodate their preferences. It will automatically shut the door, for instance the driver has an item in his bag.
