Porto Rico Importing Co.

Veteran coffee shop that specializes in international brews and a variety of loose teas

When you step into this traditional West Village shop, the aroma of freshly roasting beans fills the air. The shelves are lined with jars, sacks and dark brown beans, along with tea-making equipment, coffee accessories and sugar.

Porto Rico, originally opened in 1907 by Italian immigrants Patsy Albonese. Greenwich Village at the time was experiencing an influx of Italian immigrants, who set up businesses to meet their food requirements. Albanese named her shop after the well-known Puerto Rican coffee she imported (and sold) the beverage was that was so well-known at the time that even the Pope was a fan.

Today, Porto Rico sells 130 varieties of beans from all over the world at three locations in New York City including their Bleecker Street location, Essex Market and online. Porto Rico also roasts its own beans and provides wholesale distribution to 350 restaurants in NYC and Brooklyn.

Peter Longo, the current president and owner of the business was raised on the top floor of his family's bakery on Bleecker Street where his father operated Porto Rico. He continues to run the business in the same way to his father and grandfather.

Sey Coffee

Sey Coffee, a coffee shop and roaster located on Grattan Street, in Morgantown. This Brooklyn neighborhood, in the Bushwick district, is located on Grattan Street. Tobin Polk, Lance Schnorenberg and their 33-year-old co-founders began roasting coffee in the loft on the fourth floor just across the street in the year 2011. They called it Lofted Coffee. Local clients included Greenpoint's Budin, and Soho cart services Peddler and Peddler.

Sey's emphasis on buying micro-lots--or even whole harvests from single farmers has earned it the respect of the most expensive coffee beans discerning New York City coffee aficionados. The last time Sey was in the market, he purchased a six-bag micro lot of Danilo Dones Sitio Catucai from Brazil's Espirito Santa region. The beans were picked at their peak ripeness and floated to remove any defects. They were then dried on the farm following a 36-hour dry fermentation. The result is a cup with hints of berry lemongrass, and melon.

Sey's focus on holistically improving the well-being of growers, staff and customers extends beyond the shop. It uses composts and biodegradable plastics to keep waste out of landfills. This helps reduce greenhouse gases as well as nourish the soil. It also eliminates gratuity, which puts the baristas in a position to sustain their livelihoods and motivate them to focus on their art.

La Cabra

La Cabra, a modern specialty coffee brand, was founded in Aarhus in Denmark in 2012. They started with a small store and a team of dedicated employees. Their innovative and honest method of providing an exceptional coffee experience has earned them a loyal following not just in their own town and across the globe.

La Carba follows a strict method to select their best beans. They scour through hundreds of lots each year in order to find beans that meet their ideals. Then, they roast them in a very light style, dialing the roast to create their desired flavor profile. This gives the coffees a more vibrant flavor and clarity.

The East Village store opened last October with a sleek, minimalist style, and has been praised by international coffee enthusiasts for its scrumptious pour overs and baked goods that are overseen by head baker Jared Sexton, who's previously worked at Bien Cuit and Dominique Ansel.

The shop employs the La Marzocco Modbar and the cups, plates and bowls are designed by Wurtz ceramics, a father-and-son studio in Horsens. In a recent interview with Atlanta coffee beans in bulk Shops, General Manager Ian Walla reveals that La Cabra serves around 250 different coffees a year, and usually has seven or eight different varieties available at any given point.

The Roasting Plant Coffee

The Roasting Plant is the only multi-unit retailer of coffee that roasts on-site and brews to order, with each cup of coffee roasting and brewed to your specifications in less than an hour. It searches far and wide for the highest-grade specialty beans that are directly sourced, offering customers choice and high-quality.

The roaster they have on site is a fluid bed machine, which is different from traditional drum machines that are used in UK coffee shops. The beans are blown around the heated box by high-speed air, which keeps the beans in a suspended state and allows them to be roasted at a consistent rate as they travel through the machine.

I tried the Sumatran coffee and it was very rich with velvety mouthfeel. Dark chocolate scent was present and the coffee started to cool as you sip the coffee. The subtle scents of citrus fruit were detected.

The expensive coffee beans is transported to the Eversys super-automatic brewing systems and brewed to your specification within less than a minute. Customers can select from nine single origin options and a range of blends.

Parlor Coffee

Parlor Coffee was founded in 2012 in a barbershop with a single espresso machine. It has since morphed into a bustling coffee roastery, with beans that are available in top cafes and restaurants as well as home brewers all over the city. Parlor is committed to sourcing top-quality beans from across the globe Each one has had to endure a lengthy journey before getting into the hands of its roasters.

According to their own words, they "have an unstoppable passion for craft and believe that good coffee should be accessible to everyone." They achieve that with their down-to-earth area on a residential street. Think compost bins, chalkboards handmade up-cycled items, and a simple deco.

They roast and brew their own blends and single-origins (there were six at the time I was there) They also hold cuppings on Sundays, and are open to the public. Think of it like a brewery tasting room--you can smell and taste the ground beans, ranging from chocolaty earthy (one was very tomato-like!). It's a bit off the beaten path, but worth the journey.
